A landmark exhibition! Alfred Chircop, Maltese abstract artist's legacy honoured at Spazju Kreattiv
This exhibition will be running until the 3rd of November.
The Alfred Chircop Trust is proud to present a landmark exhibition of the late Maltese abstract artist Alfred Chircop, his first major showcase since his passing in 2015.
Titled ‘‘‘... the struggle seems to be eternal" Alfred Chircop: Paintings, Prints, Drawings’, the exhibition will be running until the 3rd of November at Spazju Kreattiv in Valletta, offering an in-depth exploration of Alfred Chircop’s artistic journey.
Curated by Dr. Christian Attard, Dr. Mark Sagona, and Dr. Charlene Vella, this exhibition reveals the late artist’s complex and deeply personal approach to art. It delves into the recurring themes that dominated his work, including the eternal struggle between opposing forces - human and divine, abstraction and figuration. The exhibition’s title, drawn from a letter Alfred Chircop wrote to his friend Emmanuel Fiorentino, encapsulates the profound, introspective nature of his work.
Divided into five thematic sections, the exhibition explores the artist’s academic formation, his shift from traditional to abstract art, and culminates with his large-scale abstract paintings. A key highlight is a faithful recreation of his personal studio, featuring his final, unfinished painting and offering visitors an intimate glimpse into his working environment. A video documentary by Charlie Cauchi adds further depth, providing insight into Alfred Chircop’s life, inspiration, and complex thought process.
Supported by Heritage Malta and other cultural institutions, this exhibition is a collaborative effort that highlights not only Alfred Chircop’s technical mastery but also the historical context in which his art evolved.
Admission to the exhibition is free, with a catalogue launching on the 24th of October. This event is part of the Spazju Kreattiv programme for 2024-25, inviting audiences to immerse themselves in the work of one of Malta’s most enigmatic artists.
