Żejtun parish priest Anton Galea-Scannura welcomed the injection of national funds for restoration works on the dome of the town’s church of St Catherine.

Built between the late 1600s and early 1700s, the majestic church was designed by leading Maltese architect Lorenzo Gafà, with a dome, Doric and Ionic pilasters and large cornices all round.

An extensive restoration project on all its facades was completed last year and now it’s time for works to move on to the dome.

“The church is part of our national artistic heritage and those who are responsible for it have a duty to take care of it for ourselves and future generations,” Fr Galea-Scannura said.

Works will be carried out by Komunità Malta and the Malta Council for the Arts, with the authorities pledging to strictly observe all regulations related to the protection of cultural heritage throughout the project.
