A Baroque beauty reborn! Żejtun’s Chapel of Santa Marija tal-Ħlas restored to its former glory

One of Żejtun’s most beloved historic landmarks has been given a new lease of life! The restoration of the 17th-century Chapel of Santa Marija tal-Ħlas has been completed, returning the centuries-old structure to its former splendour.

The project, carried out by the Restoration and Preservation Department, kicked off in February 2025 and wrapped up in September. The works included removing layers of cement plaster, cleaning and repairing the stone façades, and refilling joints using traditional, compatible materials.

The chapel’s charming wooden apertures were also carefully restored – with deteriorated parts replaced and the original finishes brought back to life. To protect the building from water damage, the team improved the rainwater system using traditional clay pipes, ensuring runoff is safely channelled without harming the stonework.

Found right in the heart of Misraħ Santa Marija, the chapel is one of Żejtun’s most historically significant sites. Originally built in 1575 and later reconstructed in 1692 after suffering extensive damage, the church once served as the main place of worship for the medieval village of Ħal Bisbut, known as ir-Raħal ta’ Fuq.

Over the centuries, it became known as il-Kappella tal-Madonna tal-Ħlas (Our Lady of Deliverance), as it was used for the burial of infants in the 17th century. The current chapel’s foundation stone was laid by Bishop Davide Cocco Palmieri on 25 November 1692 – the very same day as that of Żejtun’s new parish church, dedicated to St Catherine.

In 1850, the chapel was lovingly restored by Rev. Giovanni Tabone, who also placed the sacred relics of St Amabile beneath its main altar.

Have you visited the revamped chapel yet?
