6 medals and counting! Maltese athletes are slaying it in the Small Nations Games in Montenegro
The first day of the Small Nations Games, which is being held in Montenegro, was quite a successful one for Team Malta - our athletes raked in six medals in various sporting disciplines!

The local team is currently in the Balkans taking part in the 18th edition of the Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE). Expectations are high as these Maltese athletes could very well hit a record and surpass the haul of 29 medals won in San Marino two years ago. And, judging by yesterday’s performance, they really do stand a chance!

Here are the 6 medals that Malta won on the opening day of the 2019 Montenegro GSSE
1 Jeremy Saywell won the team’s first medal in Judo after claiming silver in the 66kg category. This was his fourth silver medal in a GSSE competition.
2 Swimmer Harry Stacey placed second in the 100m freestyle, winning silver.
3 Stacey later teamed up with Andrew Chetcuti, Matthew Galea and Dylan Cachia who came in second in the 4x100m freestyle race.

4 Mikhail Umnov took home the bronze in the 200m butterfly swim race.
5 Swimmer Mya Azzopardi placed third in the 200m Individual Medley, clocking in a new national record of 02:21:59, which was three seconds faster than the previous best.
6 Azzopardi was joined by Francesca Falzon Young, Martina Valletta, and Michelle Van Rooyen, who placed third in the women’s 4x100m relay.
