6 casual eateries to seek shelter from the rain in Malta & Gozo
Beat the deluge (and the hunger pangs!)

Kristina Cassar Dowling

Here on the little rocks we call home, we advertise blazing hot rays of sunshine that caress our skin throughout the year - well, that’s pretty much the story around here; with 300 days of sunshine gracing our land, we really can’t complain... BUT, there are those 65 days that lack that Maltese sunny element. And on these days, there’s nothing to worry about, as long as you know where to go! Here are some suggestions.

Giorgio’s

If you happen to be in the Sliema area, one of your best options is to head for the nearest café and seek shelter as soon as possible - your shopping efforts may get ruined by the pesky rain. If you’re close to Giorgio’s Cafeteria, pop in for a pick-me-up and watch the rain and wind battle it out from a cosy armchair, through the convenient glass windows.

PASH

Situated in the St Paul’s Bay area, PASH is known for its healthier options, giving junk food cravers a vegetarian twist and meat eaters a healthier alternative. When the rainy chaos starts, PASH is a great spot to refuel, sit back in the relaxed café and watch the angry drivers pass by. Comedy gold.

The National Aquarium

The National Aquarium is not too far from St Paul’s Bay and calls Qawra home, where it dominates a seriously innovative structure housing some super cool swimmers. If you’re heading here for an afternoon of fun and education while the rain pours, you can hit the in-house eatery when hunger strikes - nope, there's no need to head out into the rain!

Fontanella

A great spot to sit and watch the storm churn is Mdina - and what better place to do it in than Fontanella? The uninterrupted views make for the perfect setting to watch a storm brew in the distance. While you’re there, a slice of chocolate cake won’t hurt.

Moby Dick

Xlendi is a picturesque bay found on Malta’s sister island - Gozo. This bay is mostly frequented by tourists and locals in the summer, but also serves as a stellar spot for some rain watching during the stormy months. If you're on the sister island and are brave enough to sit under the sheltered outdoor area at Moby Dick, you could even watch the waves crash against the shores while you dine.

Café Jubilee

Retro, nostalgic, vintage and downright cool, Café Jubilee is a Gozo-born café that also spread its wings to Malta. The Gozo original in Victoria is the perfect location to get away from the rain, wind and thunder with a cold beer and a warm pie, but the Valletta and Gzira locations are great too. Sit back, relax and dream of sunshine.
