Far from cold and boring, it turns out that life on the island is pretty awesome at this time of year!
Come November, all the fuss about the endless Maltese summer has died, and most people have slipped into the idea that winter is coming and that all that fun is over. Sure, it’s certainly not summer anymore, but there are several hot surprises in terms of what can still be enjoyed during the autumn season in Malta.
It’s all about the weather. When most of our European neighbours are already deep into their woollens and jackets, you’re still getting T-shirt days in the heart of the Mediterranean. It’s warm enough to enjoy some things that colder temperatures would certainly put you off doing.
1. Diving
After a long hot summer, the water remains surprisingly warm for many weeks after the change of weather. Swimming is still possible quite comfortably until December and diving in a wetsuit is welcomed by divers all over the world who can dive in Malta throughout winter.
2. Water sports
In fact, many kind of water sports are still worth considering. With Kayaking, for example, unless you topple over, which is unlikely, you only need wade knee-deep in water. It is certainly a great way to enjoy being in the water without being in the water.
3. Days at the beach
The beach is not just for sunbathing and swimming. Go on a picnic, read a book, draw, meditate, play a game or just hang out in the fresh air with the soothing sound of waves. Don’t waste those glorious sunny autumn days!
4. Outdoors adventures
With rain and wind being only occasional and the temperatures mild, being outdoors in autumn in Malta is truly pleasant. If you’re feeling active, there’s loads of ways to enjoy the renewing green countryside, from trekking or climbing to a quadbike tour of Gozo! It’s also the perfect time of year to go camping. You actually need to splash on the sunscreen!
5. Dine al fresco
The daytime is not the only surprising aspect of autumn in Malta when it comes to activities to enjoy. November nights can be still and beautiful, if a little crisp. Well clothed, you can still enjoy a meal under the evening sky or a hot chocolate in an outdoor tea garden.
Many locals agree that the real highlight months of Malta are those in spring and autumn. Now you know why.
