Tiny sunglasses, hairbands and polka dots. Oh my!

Ipokriti / Facebook
Ipokriti was a Maltese soap opera which aired in the 1990s, all about a family-run construction business whose members were all intent on making as much money as possible, stealing each others’ spouses and stabbing each other in the back – and, all at the same time, if possible. Modelled on foreign soaps like Dallas and Dynasty, its lurid plot lines were considered highly scandalous for local television at the time, and young children were strictly forbidden from watching it (which hardly stopped some of us from doing so anyway).
The series is now available on YouTube, ready for your revisiting pleasure at any time. It’s noteworthy not just for the torrid story line, which just kept on accumulating new characters as old ones got bumped off, but for the '90s fashion, for rewatching these episodes is like a time-capsule of weird and wonderful style in Malta that decade. Here are some of the most memorable looks.

This hairband and tiny sunglasses situation

A very Charlotte from Sex and the City look.
These menacing polka dots

Have polka dots ever seemed so chilling?
And these questionable stripes

Just all over the place, really.
This high-waisted pants and plaid shirt look

Not to mention the aviators.
And this billowy floral shirt

Whimsical yet dramatic.
As well as this bright orange business suit

Because who can get ahead in business unless they’re dressed like a tangerine?
