Meet Lexie Farrugia, a 24-year-old law graduate, up-and-coming blogger and globetrotter with a wardrobe we'd love to raid! We caught up with her over a cappuccino at one of her favourite spots - Giorgio's in Sliema, of course! - for a chat about travel, fashion and everything in between.
Hey Lexie! Firstly, what made you want to start your blog?
Well, I’ve always been interested in fashion, trends and magazines, and about six years ago I started watching YouTube videos and tutorials and discover my love for blogs. I started my own blog four years ago unofficially, but nobody knew about it apart from my boyfriend! It was just for fun and an outlet to write whatever I fancied. I eventually launched it last December. My blog is called Lexie Rose May, as my grandmothers are both called Rose, and May is my mother’s second name.
It has a great ring to it! You travel quite a lot; what have been your favourite places so far?
London, definitely, and I love Rome as well. It’s beautiful just to walk around in. Recently I have a new perspective on London as I visit quite a lot since my boyfriend is studying there, so I’m starting to discover new places off the tourist trail. But Japan has to be my favourite place so far - I visited a couple of years ago and it’s incredible. The culture is so different, it was an amazing trip. I also go to Tuscany every year with my family. It’s very special to me.
Where would you most like to visit?
I would love to go to Bali for a luxury stay - I’ve been trying to convince my boyfriend! He wants to go to Vietnam, which also looks incredible. I’d also love to go to San Francisco on a road trip... I had been when I was a child but I don’t remember it!
A US road trip sounds amazing! Where are your favourite spots to go when you visit London?
I’ve actually just written a blog post about my favourite breakfast spots in London! I love planning my trips around breakfast. I’ve recently been spending a lot of time in Notting Hill- it’s a beautiful area, and I’ve just discovered Chelsea and The King’s Road which has a great vibe. Kensington is another really pretty place that I love to visit.
Do you have any packing tips for when you travel?
I’m not the best packer… but I do plan my outfits in advance so I know more or less what I’ll be wearing on each day, then I plan my accessories which I can mix up with my outfits. I’ve had to learn how to travel with just hand luggage in cold months so I usually stick to one coat. Accessories don’t take up much room so you can go to town with them, but I often end up with about 50 pairs of earrings for a two day trip!
I think we can all relate... What three beauty products you'd take with you to a desert island?
Face cleanser. As much as I love wearing make-up, I love to have clean skin whenever I’m at home or when there’s no need for make-up. Moisturiser - I’m a firm believer in moisturising my face! Definitely one with an SPF for a desert island. Actually, you should use a moisturiser with an SPF anyway! And lastly, I’d have to say mascara.
Spring is coming up! What new season trends are you most looking forward to wearing?
Not having to wear layers and tights! I’m excited about wearing more colour and bright summery shades, crochet, wearing more tailored pieces, and hats… but I actually wear hats year round! Oh, and sandals. I’m so fed up of wearing boots all the time!
What’s currently on your dream designer wish list?
At the moment I’m saving up for a Lady Dior bag - it’s a classic; the most beautiful bag! I've got my eye on the limited edition colour which is called Petal. I tend to go for designer accessories rather than clothes - like bags, scarves, belts and sunglasses that can dress up any outfit.
And what are your favourite high-street and online shops?
Missguided is great for accessories. I also discovered an online shop called Na-kd from a fashion blogger online. They deliver so quickly! But Zara is top. I also love Mango... I’ve been shopping there a lot recently.
Finally, what advice would you give to aspiring bloggers?
My advice would be to do it because you really love it and are passionate about it. Write posts that you’d love to read and posts that you’d enjoy researching. Research for fun. Try to be consistent and post often, and don’t get disheartened if you don’t get much engagement straight away. I love my job and writing my blog makes me happy. Do it because you love it!
