Zomm Nadif! Do you remember Xummiemu, Malta’s fav '90s character?
Malta’s favourite environmentalist was popular back in the day

Jillian Mallia

All 80s and 90s Maltese kids will know who we’re talking about, here. Xummiemu was the beloved local hedgehog character on a mission to save the environment on the Maltese Islands and, in turn, safeguard it.

Xummiemu was all about protecting the environment and was Malta’s top advocate against littering. The prime environmentalist really knew his stuff and promoted, not only correct disposal, but also picking up after ourselves and, if necessary, after other people in order to keep Malta’s environment as clean as possible.

Xummiemu was so popular, he’d make occasional school visits, but honestly he was a tad scary. Guess that was kinda the point - he’d scare the bejesus out of us to obey his environmental rules, which at the end of the day, were needed.

The beloved hedgehog even had his own club, called Klabb Xummiemu, that released a cool mag. And get this, Klabb Xummiemu would even send you a signed birthday card by Xummiemu himself for your special day. Cute, right?

For a while, Xummiemu went off the radar but made a comeback in 2012 during which he was kinda appointed as the ambassador for the safeguarding of the environment.

Xummiemu has been absent from the local scene lately and we kinda miss his cool ads, advocating for a better environment on our islands.

We’re totally down to #BringXummiemuBack on the local scene and he’ll make an excellent ambassador during the protests currently popping up. (And maybe, bring back those birthday cards?)
