It’s the festive season, and that means one thing: Christmas treats are back! Every Maltese household stocks up on all the goods during December, with nanna’s dining table overflowing with every local treat you can imagine. We’re already putting on a few just thinking about all the goodies we’ll be scooping up. Here are our faves!
1. Christmas log
A top contender is the obvious Christmas log. And somehow, in every household the dessert turns out different, with personalised twists added to the family recipe. But that’s what makes it extra special.
2. Pudina
The Maltese bread pudding is another classic and staple on any Maltese Christmas menu. If you’re experiencing your first Maltese Christmas, you’re going to want to stash a piece of this before it’s all gone.
3. Almond pastini
These treats are a quick go-to that you can snack on as you read your favourite book on the sofa this Christmas. Cosy nights in are calling this festive season!
4. Baci balls
Homemade baci balls are my personal weakness during the festive season. I mean, hello? The chocolately goodness just melts right in your mouth, with the crunch of the hazelnut being the best part. #Goals
5. Oreo balls
My kunjata makes the best oreo balls ever. While they’re not the traditional sort of sweets, these treats (covered in different types of chocolate, no less) are absolutely mouth-watering and are gobbled up within seconds in our family.
6. Imbuljuta
This treat is actually a warm drink. This chocolatey concoction oozes gooeyness and is one that every local looks forward to during the festive season. Ovja!
7. Qaghaq tal-ghasel
Hello December, hello qaghaq tal-ghasel! This sweet treat is particularly devoured during the last month of the year and is basically pastry stuffed with honey treacle. It’s best to nibble on it at tea-time (or any time, actually).
8. Panettone
At least one panettone is found in every Maltese household, regardless of whether the family likes it or not. It's a staple thing to gift this holiday season, and an affordable one if you've got many events in your calendar.
9. Mince Pies
Ovja, bro. Whether you're slaving away in the kitchen or heading to the store, mince pies are a must-have on any Maltese dessert table. Make sure you know where the tin is - stash some away or they'll be gone in a few days.
10. Trifle
Hello, yes, we'd like a big slice of this one. Trifle is another dessert loved by many Maltese families, and is sometimes the go-to treat after the hearty meal. #Werenotcountingcalories
