Your Malta rain starter pack! Here's everything you need to know to brave the stormy weather
Ah, rain. While we love the change in weather from the hot summer we’ve had, storms aren’t our cup of tea either, and Mother Nature seems to have some heavy rain in store for us very soon...
Anyway, life still goes on, storm or not, so here are some things to keep in mind whenever stormy weather hits the islands:
1. Xeba traffic
Somehow, on this island, traffic intensifies as soon as the first drop of rain hits the ground. Main roads are jammed, cars everywhere. It’s like people purposely leave their homes during a storm.

2. Flooding
When it rains, not only does it pour, but it rains men, cats and dogs, and floods the entire island. Places to avoid at all costs include Msida, Valley Road Birkirkara, Santa Venera, and Bugibba. If you have to brave these roads, get ready to find a cute pond in your shoes.
3. Garbage bags are the new fashion trend
You’ve JUST blow-dried your hair. This rain ain’t gonna mess that up. It’s time to suit up, and the one thing that will do the trick is a garbage bag. If you’re feeling a little more stylish, you can always buy one of those huge ponchos that footie fans wear to endure the rain. You’ll be doing the same to protect those non-waterproof shoes you decided to wear today, of all days.
4. DON'T wash your car...
…the rain will do it for you! If you’re lucky, it won’t be xita tal-hamrija (blood rain) and your car will be squeaky clean again soon! You’ll feel like #royalty.
5. Splash central!
Walking on the pavement becomes an ‘avoid the water spurts at all costs’ game. You manage to whizz through the streets without getting wet. You’ve got the last corner to go – you’re practically home free! But then, a hidden car comes out of nowhere and D R E N C H E S you from head to toe. Fail.
6. Leaks…everywhere
Once the first big rains come, it’s time to rain-proof the house, because otherwise you’re risking leaks everywhere: from under the door, the garage, the windows, the skylight, and the pesky vents. Get cracking!
Stay safe out there, folks!
