Kirkop’s popular festive attraction, the Klaus Percopus Village, has been honoured with the title of European Village of Christmas 2026, a distinction that brings international recognition to both the locality and Malta.

The accolade forms part of the European Capitals of Christmas initiative, which this year also recognised Barcelona in Spain as the European Capital of Christmas (for cities with over 100,000 residents) and Wels in Austria as the European City of Christmas (10,000–100,000 residents).

The winners were chosen by an international panel that convened in Waterford, Ireland, this year’s European Christmas City, during the International Congress of European Christmas Cities and Festivals. Supported by the European Commission and the Christmas Cities Network, the jury evaluated numerous submissions before selecting the standout projects.

This Europe-wide initiative aims to encourage unity, cultural exchange, and the celebration of Christmas traditions across the continent. For 2025, the honours went to Vilnius (Lithuania), Celje (Slovenia), and Noja (Spain) in their respective categories.

Kirkop’s council said the award recognises the village’s unique blend of tradition, storytelling, and creativity. The immersive world of Klaus Percopus, complete with characters such as Klaus, Leonard, Joseph, Menhires, and Benedetta, has become a defining part of its festive charm. Children are encouraged to write letters to Santa and receive personalised replies, while the programme also supports charitable and volunteer initiatives in collaboration with local NGOs.

At the heart of the village’s story is Klaus, the joyful son of Percopu, chief of the Dejma guards. Known not for bravery in battle but for his warmth and laughter, Klaus embodies the spirit of the season.

The council added that, together with artist and creator Clint Grech, efforts are already underway to expand the festive programme and further strengthen Kirkop’s international profile.
