Marsamxett Harbour is an important part of local history, having been used by varies forces. Sliema, Gzira and Ta’ Xbiex can be found at the northern end of the harbour and has a number of historic points within it, namely Fort Tigne, Manoel Island and Fort Manoel, Lazzaretto Hospital, yacht yards and marinas.

While Marsamxett is rich in history, it also seems to have been a popular swimming spot, judging by this vintage photo. The snapshot captures a number of people on the rocks and in the water, with two even posing on the diving board. According to comments on the photo, the snapshot seems to have been taken sometime in the ‘50s and the area is known by locals as il-banjijiet (the bathtubs).
