The Malta Tourism Authority's regeneration of Pjazza tal-Belt Vittoriosa, better known as Misraħ ir-Rebħa in Birgu, has earned international acclaim after receiving an award at the BIG SEE Makes Sense Awards in Portorož, Slovenia.

The project was also awarded a Special Mention at the prestigious Architizer A+ Awards, further cementing Malta's reputation for excellence in heritage conservation, urban regeneration, and sustainable tourism.

Birgu renovation

Recognised as one of South-East Europe's leading architecture and design events, the BIG SEE Festival celebrates projects that successfully combine innovation, sustainability, and cultural sensitivity. The Birgu regeneration was praised for revitalising a historic public square while carefully preserving its rich architectural and cultural heritage.

Located at the heart of the historic maritime city, Misraħ ir-Rebħa has long served as a focal point for residents and visitors alike. The regeneration transformed the square into a more accessible, pedestrian-friendly public space through new paving, landscaping, lighting, seating areas, and improved accessibility. The project also included the restoration of important landmarks, including the Statue of Saint Lawrence and the historic Victory Monument.

The initiative forms part of a broader national strategy to strengthen the historic character of the Three Cities through close collaboration between the Malta Tourism Authority, Infrastructure Malta, Birgu Local Council, the Ministry for Tourism, and the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage.
