Today, on World Television Day, the Department of Malta shared a nostalgic throwback on their Facebook page, offering a glimpse into the history of television in Malta. The post featured a photo of a vintage TV set, sparking fond memories of Malta’s broadcasting journey.

Television first arrived in Malta in 1957, when broadcasts from RAI in Sicily became accessible to the island. These early transmissions marked the beginning of a new era of entertainment and information for the Maltese public. However, it was in 1962 that Malta took a monumental step with the launch of TVM, the island’s first public broadcaster, established by the Public Broadcasting Services.

The vintage TV set featured in the post serves as a reminder of how far technology has come since those early days. Bulky and simple in design, these old-school models were once the centerpiece of Maltese living rooms, bringing families together for news, dramas, and other programs.

The Department’s post encourages reflection on how television has evolved—from grainy black-and-white images to the high-definition screens of today—and how it continues to play a significant role in shaping culture and connecting communities.

Do you remember tuning in to TVM or adjusting an antenna for the clearest signal?
