Woah! Check out this original newspaper clipping announcing the outbreak of the plague in 1813
And it’s in pretty good shape, considering!

Super cool! ENT specialist and history buff Dr Doreen Galea Vincenti Zarb shared shots of the old Giornale Di Malta (Malta Gazette) that dates back to Saturday 19th June 1813, announcing the outbreak of the plague.

“I found this at the bottom of a small forgotten drawer where it served the function of lining said drawer in all probability for these last two centuries,” she shared in the local history group. “Malta by then had been under British rule for 13years but the newspaper was printed in Italian. Note June written as ' Giungno'. I scanned all three pages just in case someone wishes to read all of it. Although its not in very good shape, its still very legible.”

Dr Galea shares with us that the sheets of the old newspaper are from her own private collection and has many more where that came from! It is said that the periodical had a total of 94 issues and was primarily written in Italian, since hardly any of the Maltese knew English and the Maltese language hadn’t settled as a written language yet, said one Facebook user.

Interesting stuff!
