Dead whale found beached in Comino as authorities urge public to keep their distance
Authorities say there is a potential health risk because of transmissible diseases.

A dead whale has washed up on the shores of Comino, prompting authorities to issue a warning to the public. Environmental teams are currently on site assessing the situation and planning the safest way to remove the massive carcass.

The discovery was first reported after Nature Trust – FEE Malta was alerted by the Environment & Resources Authority (ERA) about the carcass on the small island of Comino.

Over the past several hours, teams from both organisations, including veterinary specialist Vincent Gruppetta, have been assessing the situation to determine the safest and most effective way to remove the whale, which may have to involve taking it out to sea.

Officials are strongly advising members of the public not to approach or touch the carcass. At this stage, the cause of death remains unknown, and authorities say there is a potential health risk.

‘Whales are mammals just like humans, and there may be conditions that could be transmissible,’ the organisations warned.
