Shaping beauty: The tradition of glass blowing in Malta
Glass blowing was introduced in Malta during the 20th century!

Lyndsey Grima

Glass blowing in Malta is a fascinating craft that combines creativity, skill, and tradition. Often described as a delicate dance between fire and breath, the process involves shaping molten glass by hand while it is still glowing and flexible. This careful balance between heat, timing, and craftsmanship allows artisans to transform raw materials into beautiful decorative pieces.

Although glass blowing was introduced to Malta during the 20th century, the craft draws inspiration from centuries-old Mediterranean glassmaking traditions. Over time, Maltese artisans developed a distinctive style that reflects the island’s vibrant culture and artistic heritage.

Maltese glass is particularly known for its bright colours and flowing, organic shapes. Bowls, vases, ornaments and sculptures are carefully formed while the glass is still molten, ensuring that no two pieces are exactly the same. This handmade approach means that every creation carries the personal touch of the artisan who crafted it.

Today, glass blowing remains an important part of Malta’s artistic scene and cultural identity.

Have you ever seen the process of glass-blowing live?
