Winged rescue! Migrant Dunlin bird found in difficulty at Gnejna Bay
This bird can usually be spotted wading in shallow waters, on beaches or in the island’s nature reserves

The Malta Ranger Unit have reported the finding of a Dunlin bird, known as ‘Beggazzina tad-Dabra’ in Maltese, in difficulty at Gnejna Bay in Mgarr. A member of the public spotted the bird yesterday and informed one of the Rangers, who collected the bird that seemed to be injured.

The bird was immediately passed on to BirdLife Malta, where it will be nursed back to health. As there were no evident wounds, there’s hope for a full recovery.

The Dunlin is a medium-sized bird known as a wader, often found wading in shallow waters, such as those seen at the Ghadira, Simar and Salina Nature Reserves. The birds are most commonly spotted on their entry to the islands during spring and during return passage between July and November but can actually be seen on the islands all year round.

Hoping for a swift recovery for our winged visitor!
