When vintage ruled the roads! Classic cars surround Qormi’s Church of St George in 1971 photo
Ever wondered what Qormi looked like 50 years ago? A recently shared photograph by Dave Chesworth, dating back to 1971, provides a glimpse of just that. The image features the Church of St. George, one of the village’s most important landmarks, surrounded by an array of classic vintage cars – vehicles that were once a common sight but are now mostly confined to museums and car shows.
One standout detail in the photo is an old taxi, though far from what we’re accustomed to seeing today. It’s a burgundy Mercedes, bearing an unusual number plate that simply reads TAXI – 74. Nearby, eagle-eyed commenters on the post have identified another rarity – a cream Vauxhall, a model seldom seen on the roads today except at vintage car exhibitions.
While the cars reflect a bygone era, the Church of St. George remains a steadfast presence in Qormi’s landscape. Built in 1585, with its distinctive dome added in 1684 based on designs by renowned Maltese architect Lorenzo Gafà, the church has stood witness to centuries of history. Despite the many changes around it, its facade remains remarkably unchanged – a testament to the enduring beauty of Malta’s architectural heritage that surrounds us on a daily basis!
