Wheels of change! Check out this old photo showing Gozo’s early bus era captured in 1932
The National Archives of Malta recently shared a fascinating snapshot of Gozo’s transport history on their social media pages, taking us back to 1932 with a rare photograph of the island’s early bus service.
The image features the second-generation Bus 143, proudly brand new at the time, parked in front of St George’s Church in Victoria. Like many buses of the era, this model was an upgrade from earlier, smaller and less durable versions that struggled to cope with the island’s needs.
The transition to larger, sturdier vehicles was a turning point in Gozo’s public transport development, enabling more reliable service for both passengers and goods.
In keeping with local tradition, the new bus was blessed by Parish Priest Alfons Maria Hili (1865–1943), a respected figure in the community. Such blessings were a common and culturally significant practice in the early 20th century, reflecting the strong connection between everyday life and religious customs in Maltese society.
Moments like this remind us how deeply intertwined technology, tradition, and community have always been in shaping Gozo’s story.
