Teatru Manoel has a stellar week in store for anyone who loves the arts. Luminaries from the operatic world will tread the boards throughout the week, with the event will kicking off with a new production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni. And, on the 6 March, Vassilis Varvaresos, who has played at Carnegie’s Zankel Hall and at the White House for President Barrack Obama, will showcase his technique with operatic paraphrases. Other highlights include performances by flutist Rebecca Hall and pianist Lucia Micallef. Monday 5 March – Sunday 11 March: Xewwex – Multimedia Exhibition – Spazju Kreattiv, Valletta.
Spazju Kreattiv
Lisa Iglesias, part of Spazju Kreattiv’s artists’ residency programme, examins the causal relationships between time, subjectivity and wonder in this multi-media exhibition. She composes thousands of individual drawings and collages on paper that she then documents in audio-visual sequence to produce a sense of motion. Lines and forms continuously and irregularly jump, producing a frenzied visual energy. The event is open to the public for free. Thursday 8 March: Haġraisland exhibition opening – Malta Society of Arts, Palazzo La Salle, Valletta.
This first show by artist Isaac Azzopardi reflects on the changing aesthetics of Malta through the use of construction material, as well as appropriation and rubbing techniques. The official opening is this Thursday but don’t worry if you miss it – the exhibition is also open to the public from 9th till 29th March. Wednesday 7 March at 7pm: A Taste of France – Cru Wine Bar, Valletta
Experience France’s wine country with this tasting event at Cru Wine Bar in Valletta. Wines from the Loire valley, Burgundy, Beajoulais, Northern Rhône and Bordeaux will be sniffed, swished and sampled. Thursday 8 March at 8pm: Metal over Malta Festival IV Pre-Party Metal – Funky Monkey, Gzira
The Metal over Malta Festival, held at Chateau Buskett from 9-10 March, is going into its fourth edition and what better way to celebrate than a pre-metal party taking place on Thursday? Hit the bar and head bang to music from your favourite metal bands at Funky Monkey. The bands playing at the main event might also be there – so this might be your chance to meet the musicians before they hit the stage at the weekend. The event entrance is free. A collaboration of nations:
Tuesday 6 March at 7:30pm: MED Combo Valletta 2: a concert of ethnic music (The Mediterranean Dimension project) – Spazju Kreattiv, Valletta.
In this concert of ethnic music, an ensemble of Mediterranean artists, led by Syrian composer and oud player Hassan Taha, who is based in Bern, Switzerland, will showcase the compositions and work they’ve been toiling over during the Intercultural Music Residency which is taking place between the 27 February and 6 March 2018. Wednesday 7 March at 7:30pm: A Wedding Invitation – Spazju Kreattiv, Valletta.
In this Chinese romantic comedy, high school sweethearts Qiao Qiao and Li Xing are about to graduate from university when Li Xing surprises Qiao Qiao with a marriage proposal. Qiao Qiao, however, declines the proposal, offering rash arguments as to why she’s not ready. Little does he know Qiao Qiao has a devastating secret. Organised by the China Cultural Centre, the film was a success in its home territories, raking in 192 million at the box office. For tickets, click on here.
