Haġraisland, the first show by Isaac Azzopardi, is a collection of reflections about the changing aesthetics of Malta. Through the use of construction material, appropriation and rubbing techniques, the show revolves around three main references: Austin Camilleri’s installation Stones from 1999, as Maltese contemporary art canon, Anselm Kiefer’s ideas about art as alchemy and Malta’s changing urbanity. The use of the fortification as subject matter is as a body constructed of Maltese limestone brick—a conglomerate of history, identity, functionalities and economy. The official opening is on Thursday 8th March at 730pm. The event is also open to the public from 9th till 29th March: Monday to Friday from 8:3am to 7pm and on Saturdays from 8:30am to 1:30pm.
