What a beaut! Check out these vintage photos of Valletta from way back when
Nostalgia alert!

Jillian Mallia

Digging up old photos from a time gone by brings a sense of nostalgia like no other. These photos of Valletta are extremely gorgeous and make us thing of a possibly simpler time.

1. Republic Street (Strada Irjali)

Valletta’s main street was busy as ever then, just like it is nowadays. While things have certainly changed, it remains the heart and soul of the city.

2. Auberge de Castille

This was probably taken in the late ‘20s, beginning ‘30s. It looks so different, doesn’t it?

3. St Joseph Street

This one is what looks like St Joseph Street which is known as it-triq tal-Francizi (the French’s road). And that structure in the distance seems to be none other than the grand Fort St Elmo

4. Narrow streets

Valletta is full of narrow streets with shops, pasticcerias and bars. While many still exist today, some have fallen into a sad, dilapidated state.

5. St George’s Square

This was taken on 9th June 1939 during the King’s birthday parade. This was just three months before World War II began.

6. Queen’s Square (Pjazza Regina)

Queen’s Square was actually called Republic Square, but shortly after a statue of Queen Victoria was erected, it changed its name. The square features the Bibliotheca in the background and is nowadays filled with café’s tables and chairs.

Incredible, right?
