Well done! Maltese sailors impress across Europe with strong international performances
Currently, Malta is competing in the IODA World Championships in Slovenia, with five sailors progressing to the final series.
Maltese sailors have continued to shine on the international stage, earning impressive results across several prestigious regattas.
At Germany’s Kiel Week, Timmy Vassallo claimed a remarkable win in the ILCA 4 class, dominating the fleet with eight race victories and finishing first overall. Fellow sailor Louyn Fereday placed 33rd. In the ILCA 6 class, Benjamin Vassallo and Mia Busuttil reached the Gold Fleet, finishing 13th and 55th respectively out of 119 sailors, while Harry Fairbairn placed 71st. At the concurrent ILCA 6 Men’s World Championship, Poyraz Fidaboy and Afonso Southino battled through tough weather to finish 97th and 98th.
Meanwhile, in Poland, the ILCA 4 Youth European Championships challenged sailors with unpredictable winds. Jonas Micallef made the Gold Fleet and placed 35th overall. In the Silver Fleet, Tom Ellul and Kaine Muscat (both U16 debutants) placed 22nd and 38th, while Thomas Wilson and Emily Fenech finished 59th and 38th respectively.
Foiling Week in Lake Garda brought more success, as Antonia Schultheis won the women’s category in the new Switch class, edging out top international sailors. Her sister Victoria, competing in the Moth class, was the top female finisher, ranking 29th among 88.
At the IODA European Championships, six of seven Maltese sailors made the Gold Fleet, with standout performances by Alexandra Nagrudnaya (7th overall) and Isaac Azzopardi (26th). Malta placed 9th among nations.
