WATCH: Western whip snake freed from wall in Gozo
Western whip snakes aren’t venomous and actually help by eating rats and mice.

Francesca Vella

Last week, Nature Trust’s Wildlife Rescue Team in Gozo received a call about a wild animal in need – a Western Whip Snake had gotten itself stuck in a metal plate embedded in a wall.

Luckily, one of the trained volunteers was quick to respond and came fully prepared. With a little patience and a screwdriver, the snake was freed safely and immediately slithered back into the wild – too fast, in fact, for anyone to catch the dramatic escape on camera!

While some may shudder at the thought of a snake, there’s no need to panic – the Western Whip Snake is completely harmless to humans. In fact, it plays a crucial role in our ecosystem by helping control pests like rats and mice.

The Wildlife Rescue Team reminds the public that all the animals they rescue are protected species, and it is illegal in Malta to harm them or keep them as pets. Their trained volunteers are licensed, experienced, and fully equipped to handle wildlife safely.

If you ever spot a wild animal in distress while exploring the countryside, whether it’s a hedgehog, turtle, bird, or reptile, don’t approach it! Instead, call the Wildlife Rescue Team Malta on 9999 9505.

Also, did you know you can visit some of these rescued animals in person? Nature Trust’s Rehabilitation Centre at Xrobb l-Għaġin is open to the public, where you might see hedgehogs, sea turtles, and other native species currently in recovery. Entrance is free, with donations welcome, but booking is required – email [email protected] to secure your visit.

A big thank you goes to the public for reporting wildlife in need, the dedicated volunteers, and the vets who give these animals a second chance.

Have you ever encountered a wild animal in Malta or Gozo?
