Deepa Prashad, a TV and digital host, visited the bakery and documented all the gooey and juicy goodness that comes from Maltese food. First up is pastizzi. “They stretch and roll everything by hand, so when they take the pastry out and they stretch it, they add a whole set of margarine on top, which helps to make it so incredibly flaky.” And tasty!
At the Malta Bake Shop, you can even put in a special request for a veggie option, as well as opting to take a few frozen ones home to pop in the oven later on.
Another typical Maltese dish that Deepa features is the one and only timpana. “The best way I could describe the timpana is that it is similar to a chicken pie, so you have that nice pastry on the outside and on the inside it’s filled with pasta and a meat sauce that is made of beef, pork and cheese.” *Calls nearest bakery*
Deepa also tries Maltese sweets, and notes that “the use of almonds is something that’s very traditional.” She tried the loaded almond pastry that is “so rich, so heavy. I want to eat it with a spoon, but I don’t know if that’s the smartest thing to do!”
She also tried honey rings - sweet dough pastries, piped with gooey filling, rolled up and formed into a ring. Us locals love and know this treat all too well!
