WATCH: Striking footage of Malta during World War II will leave you speechless
Malta has been through a lot...

Jillian Mallia

World War II for Malta, like many other countries, was quite the challenging time. Malta was hit hard, having been bombed every day for two years and was considered as an unsung hero of the war. As time goes by memories pop up with old photos and footage of a time gone by that allows us to look back on those dark days with appreciation towards our forefathers.

In this footage shared to local history Facebook group Nostalgia Malta, our islands are seen suffering as bombs are thrown our way. Locals are captured walking out of shelters after yet another air raid and sitting on rubble in the street.

In the video, backed by a sombre version of the popular Maltese song L-ahhar bidwi f’Wied il-Ghasel, a man is seen winding the air raid siren before another bomb hits and the aftermath of one of the many bombings.

In later footage, local features such as the Maltese coloured buses and the George Cross are seen, as well as photographs of old traditions and customs.
