Rabat and Mdina will glow under the light of thousands of candles on Saturday night, as three historic sites open their doors for a special night-time experience.

Heritage Malta’s Museums by Candlelight returns on 19th September for the final edition of this year’s series, transforming the Domvs Romana, St Paul’s Catacombs and National Museum of Natural History after dark.

From 7pm until midnight, visitors will be able to explore all three sites illuminated by candlelight, with live music and entertainment accompanying them along the way.

At the Domvs Romana, visitors can wander among mosaics and artefacts offering a glimpse into the life of a Roman aristocratic family who lived in Malta some 2,000 years ago. First opening its doors in 1882, it is Malta’s first purpose-built archaeological museum.

At St Paul’s Catacombs, people can explore Malta’s largest complex of interconnected underground cemeteries, which served as a burial ground during Punic, Roman and Byzantine times.

In Mdina, the National Museum of Natural History in Vilhena Palace showcases an extensive collection of Malta’s natural heritage, including a mummified Nile crocodile, the skull of a false killer whale, a fossilised crocodilian head discovered in Gozo, and a tooth from the extinct giant white shark.

The entire experience costs just €3 for access to all three sites, while Heritage Malta members can enter for free with pre-booking.
