WATCH: Storm clouds gather and heavy rain pelts Gozo – is an unpredictable summer on the horizon?
Meanwhile, Malta remains sunny!

Francesca Vella

While much of Malta continues to enjoy early summer sunshine, Gozo has already seen its fair share of wet weather recently. Storm clouds gathered over the sister island today, with Xewkija experiencing an intense downpour, captured on video and shared by the page Maltese Islands Weather.

So far, Malta has remained mostly dry, but for how long? The forecast for today, according to Maltese Islands Weather, says isolated thunderstorms are possible for the first half of the day, but the skies should clear up in the afternoon. The winds should increase later on though, so you’ll want to keep updated on ferry services if you plan on using them this evening.

According to local forecasters, we’re currently under the influence of a low-pressure system lingering over the central Mediterranean, and that means a season of surprises might be in store. These kinds of conditions are known to trigger sudden, isolated thunderstorms that can sneak in between sunny spells, sometimes with little warning.

Malta’s seen it before: stretches of hot, muggy weather interrupted by brief but intense rainfall, even well into the summer. Could this be another Mediterranean summer where the weather keeps us guessing?

Are you hoping for rain or sunshine?
