Say hello to Machu Picchu, a tiny hedgehog with a big comeback story! He was found on 3rd December, curled up in a garage, lethargic and malnourished, likely after falling from a high wall. Things didn’t look great at first, but thanks to quick action and expert care at the Xrobb l-Għaġin Nature Park and Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, Machu Picchu was given a second chance.
After 14 days of warmth, treatment and careful monitoring, this little fighter regained his strength, and was finally ready for his next adventure. He has since been released into a safe field, away from traffic and chemicals, with plenty of natural food to forage and explore.
Nature Trust Malta reminds the public that all wildlife species they rescue are protected, and it is illegal to keep them as pets, no matter how tempting it might be. Their trained volunteers are equipped with the necessary permits, knowledge and tools to handle rescues safely and responsibly.
If you ever spot a wild animal that appears injured or in distress, don’t intervene yourself. Instead, contact the Wildlife Rescue Team on 9999 9505, who will guide you on the best course of action.
A huge thank you goes out to everyone who takes the time to make that call, as well as to the vets and dedicated rescue and rehabilitation volunteers who work tirelessly to give animals like Machu Picchu a second chance at life.
Wishing Machu Picchu the best of luck on his adventures!
