Warning! Maltese explorer Pierre Farrugia sounds alarm on imminent collapse of Munxar Window
Take care when hiking and swimming in the area!

The Munxar Window, a popular spot for hikers along the south coast of Malta, is located near the southern tip of St. Thomas Bay in Marsaskala, close to the reef known as ‘Sikka tal-Munxar’ in Maltese. This picturesque rock formation is frequently visited by locals and tourists, who enjoy swimming, kayaking, and instagramming the scenic views.

However, after a recent visit, local explorer Pierre Farrugia has raised concerns about the structural integrity of the Munxar Window due to significant weathering, making it unsafe to swim beneath. While hiking near the arch, Farrugia observed a canal forming in the rock at the top, making it more vulnerable to collapse. He noted extensive cracks in the section connecting the arch to the mainland, which is primarily composed of soil. The base of the arch is so fragile that pieces of rock can be removed by hand.

While emphasising that he’s by no means an expert geologist, Pierre Farrugia expresses his belief that the site has become too dangerous for swimming, kayaking, or walking on the arch, and he now avoids doing so himself, urging others to follow suit.

The explorer also reminds viewers of the tragic accident that occurred approximately 400 meters away, where a woman lost her life after being struck by a falling rock. The surrounding area is notorious for rockfalls, further highlighting the potential risks.

In his video, Farrugia captures a moment when visitors are seen taking photos in a precarious position on a ‘wafer-thin’ rock ledge, and he warns them of the danger they face.
