A team of 53 volunteers picked up a whopping 1,276.14 kg of waste in a five-hour beach clean-up at Marsaxlokk.

The event was organised by local eNGO Zibel – an entity dedicated to reducing the overall waste generated in Malta and restoring its natural environments to their most natural states.

Zibel took to social media to celebrate the successful clean-up.

“Great vibes and a solid haul. As our southern tour continues, we broke the one tonne mark yet again. Fantastic to see our volunteers show up with such enthusiasm and drive,” it wrote.

Of the 1,276.14 kg of waste collected, plastic accounted for 67.44 kg, ropes and fishing waste for 391.7 kg, glass for 94.9 kg, metal for 271.38 kg, and mixed and bulky waste for 451 kg.

The clean-up was supported by waste reduction campaign Saving Our Blue, the Ministry for the Environment, Energy, and Enterprise, and the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA).

Just last week, Zibel hosted another clean-up along Birzebbuga waters. Said event also saw over a tonne of waste get collected.
