Valletta’s stunning Co-Cathedral of St John has announced that it is welcoming a new Pro-Rector: Mgr Paul Carmel Vella.

Sharing the news on social media, St John’s Co-Cathedral wrote “we express our heartful thanks to Mgr Victor Zammit McKeon as the outgoing Pro-Rector (2016-2021) and we welcome Mgr Paul Carmel Vella for his new appointment as Pro-Rector.”

Mgr Vella was ordained priest in 1988, going on to continue his studies in 1995 at the Lateran University in Rome. In 1997, he was appointed Defender of Marriage in the Ecclesiastical Tribunal, then Judge as part of the same tribunal. He’s enjoyed several appointments since then, most recently as archpriest in charge of St Helen’s parish church in Birkirkara in 2017.

St John's Co-Cathedral was built by the Order of St John between 1572 and 1577, after being commissioned by Grand Master Jean de la Cassière.

Designed by Maltese architect Girolamo Cassar, its celebrated interior is redecorated in the Baroque style by Mattia Preti and other artists, resulting in a breath-taking interior that is widely considered to be one of the finest examples of high Baroque architecture in Europe.

We wish its new Pro-Rector all the best!
