UPDATE: Crisis averted as Mediterranean Hurricane narrowly misses the Maltese Islands
It was a close one for Malta & Gozo!

Jillian Mallia

The Maltese Islands have had a stroke of luck as the Medicane (Mediterranean Hurricane) ‘Zorbas’ has just missed us, and is now heading towards Crete and southern Greece. Zorbas is set to hit there on Saturday, before picking up speed and heading to western Turkey on Sunday. These parts of Europe are also expected to have heavy rains over the weekend.

Malta and Gozo have narrowly avoided the storm (phew!) and despite strong wind warnings issued by the Met Office yesterday, the Islands have not been hit by the heavy rain that could have caused flooding.

Still, don't head out to the beach just yet! Winds in Malta are still set to be strong this weekend, with chances of rain also mentioned, though it's looking like the Islands will have calmer weather on Sunday. As a precaution, it's best to avoid coastal areas around Malta and Gozo over the weekend if you can - these include St Julian’s, Sliema, Bugibba, Mellieha, Xemxija, Marsaxlokk, and Marsascala, where seas tend to be rough.
