Underwater adventure! Pierre Farrugia’s snorkelling exploration around Fort St Angelo
The expedition involved a small octopus, an unexpected cannon and secret passages!

The local nature vlogger, Pierre Farrugia, can always be counted upon to share a little undiscovered beauty from some corner of the Maltese Islands. This time, the corner is a little more urban than usual, as his exploration takes us under the seas surrounding Fort St Angelo in Birgu.

Pierre began his route on the side of the fort that overlooks Kalkara, snorkelling his way around the fort, spotting a tiny octopus along the way. On approaching the side of the fort, he points out the arches connecting the fort to what are now apartment buildings, but were probably the fortifications of Vittoriosa back in the time of the Knights. He also points out several small coves on the side of the fort that are not usually noticeable at a distance.

An exciting discovery was that of a cannon lodged underwater, about which the explorer informed the authorities, who claimed that it will be retrieved and restored. His underwater camera provides the viewer with a good look at this relic, which probably dates back to war times!

Once he reached land, the rest of Pierre’s expedition involved the exploration of caves leading to narrow tunnels that have now been blocked off, but likely formed a passage underneath the entire length of Fort St Angelo that was used by the Knights.

Although the environment of this particular vlog had less greenery than Pierre Farrugia’s usual posts, the historical discoveries and underwater element made it one of his most interesting entries yet!

A big thanks to Pierre for taking us on regular adventures around the island!
