Two inlets closed to boats as Comino’s Blue Lagoon designates more area for swimmers
Vessel traffic and berthing controls have also been strengthened to regulate movement in the busy coastal zone.
As summer approaches, several updates have been made at the Blue Lagoon in Comino, aimed at improving swimmer safety, managing visitor numbers, and supporting environmental upkeep.
The main swimming area has been extended by 12%, and two smaller inlets to the left of the jetty have been newly designated as swimmer-only zones. These inlets, previously open to boats, jet skis, and other small watercraft, are now roped off and reserved for exclusive use by swimmers. According to Team Blue Lagoon, this change is part of ongoing efforts to enhance maritime safety and reduce potential conflicts between vessels and swimmers.

In addition to the expanded swimming area, measures have been introduced to improve overall site management. Vessel traffic and berthing controls have been strengthened to better regulate movement in the busy coastal zone.
Environmental management has also been stepped up. Cleaning and waste disposal operations have been doubled, with teams now carrying out more frequent maintenance, particularly in nearby garigue habitats, where wind-blown litter can accumulate. Environmental enforcement agencies have increased patrols to deter littering and other violations.
This all comes on the heels of another major change: the launch of the Book. Protect. System – a free online booking platform introduced to manage visitor numbers. After record crowds of up to 12,000 people at once in summer 2024, the system now caps visitor numbers at a more sustainable 4,000 people at any one time. The move is designed to help preserve the delicate ecosystem of this beautiful natural site.
