Turning down the noise! Malta halts demolition and excavation in key tourist zones this summer
The ban applies between 15th June and 30th September 2025.
If you've ever tried to enjoy a peaceful seaside coffee or a quiet hotel stay in the summer, only to be greeted by the roar of a demolition site next door, you’re not alone. Thankfully, Malta is hitting the pause button on disruptive construction work during peak tourist season.
From 15th June to 30th September 2025, demolition and excavation works will be banned in designated touristic zones across Malta and Gozo. This seasonal initiative is being spearheaded by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) in collaboration with the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA), with the goal to make Malta quieter, cleaner, and more enjoyable for both tourists and locals during the sunny season.
Heavy construction work, especially demolition and excavation, is known to cause significant noise, dust, and disruption, affecting nearby hotels, homes, and businesses. With more families choosing to live in touristic areas, and thousands of visitors arriving each week, the decision to halt these works is a move towards protecting quality of life and safeguarding Malta’s tourism appeal.
This motion is backed by Subsidiary Legislation 623.08, meaning enforcement is taken seriously. If demolition or excavation works are carried out illegally during this period, they can be reported to the BCA by calling 138 (available for both Malta and Gozo, even outside office hours).
The restricted areas include entire towns and specific streets known for their touristic value. Among the full localities covered are Valletta, Mdina and The Three Cities. In addition, specific zones within various localities across Malta and Gozo will be restricted too, including Sliema, St Julian’s, Mosta, Rabat, Mellieħa, Marsaxlokk and Marsaskala.
You can find the full list of roads and areas affected by the ban on the official MTA website here. Keep in mind, however, the list of restricted roads may be updated or modified throughout the summer.
If you notice demolition or excavation work happening in one of the restricted areas between June 15th and September 30th, don't hesitate to report it!
