What a whopper!

It’s official – Malta’s tuna season has begun!

On Wednesday afternoon, the very first tuna of the season made its way into St Paul’s Bay, with each fish reportedly weighing in at an impressive 180 kilograms on average. The sight of the mighty bluefin tuna returning to local shores is a strong indicator that the annual season is now underway, drawing the attention of fishermen and seafood enthusiasts alike.

To support the industry during this busy period, the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture has launched a free 24-hour offloading service from the Marsaxlokk quay. This initiative aims to streamline the process for fishers bringing in their catch, making use of a modern crawling crane to handle the hefty tuna hauls with ease.

With the first catch reeled in and support systems in place, the tuna season is off to a strong – and sustainable – start.
