A COVID-19 travel arrangement is being proposed connecting Malta to Sicily, Sweden, Germany and Israel
Travel lovers have undoubtedly had their plans for the year thwarted due to the pandemic which has seen airports worldwide, including Malta, close down for an indefinite period. However, as the situation in Malta gradually stabilizes, talks are now in progress to restart the tourism industry by opening a channel between countries who have responded positively to the threat of Coronavirus.
A concept first proposed by Tourism Minister Julia Farrugia Portelli and then by the Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association, an agreement could be reached that would allow travel between Malta and four other destinations: Sicily, Sweden, Germany and Israel.
Referred to as "travel bubbles", this would be a restricted form of travel which could re-ignite the tourism industry in a relatively safe way.
As England moves to enforce a two-week quarantine on people who fly into the country, this could be one safety measure which could be implemented, should the project be green-lit.
At the time of writing, it is not clear when the airport will re-open however the EU have extended its travel ban till the 15th of June.
