Situated along the scenic Xemxija Heritage Trail in the Maltese Islands stands a silent piece of history, revered by generations for its resilience and longevity. Aptly named ‘The Old Carob Tree’, known in Maltese as ‘Il-Ħarruba Xwejħa’, this ancient tree bears witness to centuries of change and remains a cherished symbol of cultural heritage.

Believed to be over a thousand years old, The Old Carob Tree commands attention with its imposing presence and remarkable circumference of 7.25 meters. Its gnarled branches reach towards the sky, whispering tales of long-gone eras to those who pause to listen.

However, The Old Carob Tree is not merely a relic of the past; it continues to play a vital role in the lives of locals, offering an array of practical uses and medicinal properties. The brown pods, harvested in mid-August, serve as essential fodder for livestock, providing sustenance for goats, sheep, cows, horses, and rabbits alike.

Beyond its agricultural significance, this tree holds a treasure trove of culinary and medicinal secrets. The syrup derived from its fruit is renowned for its efficacy in soothing coughs, while its gum finds its way into various culinary delights, from ice cream to savoury dishes, adding a unique flavour profile cherished by gourmands.

However, the legacy of The Old Carob Tree extends far beyond its tangible offerings. For centuries, it has inspired poets and artists, captivating the imagination with its timeless beauty. Among those enchanted by its allure is Frans Scerri, whose poignant poem pays homage to the majesty of this ancient guardian of nature.
