Throwing it back! Do you remember these 10 girl & boy bands we all went wild for?
Excuse the multiple fan girl moments I will definitely have while writing this because this stuff is my JAM. I’ve got a Spotify playlist dedicated to all these gems, so you know I mean business. We’ve all had a crush on a few of these (ok, all of these) girl and boy bands, because let’s face it, they were the highlight of our youth.
For the next generation who have no idea what I’m on about, sit down, grab a notepad, because y’all about to be educated on the art that is girl and boy groups, coated in a heck of a lot of denim. You can thank me later.
1. Destiny’s Child
All hail Destiny’s Child. Queen B, before she became the successful independent woman she is, headed this girl group that gave us hits like Say My Name, Survivor, and Bootylicious – all songs that empower women. #GoListen
2. TLC
Nicknamed T-Boz, Left Eye and Chilli, the three girls made up the iconic girl group, TLC. This group gave us Scrubs, a jamming song that is still played in clubs to this day. Oh, and that leather and skimpy clothing. That’s the '90s for ya!
3. Spice Girls
The British girl band made waves back in the '90s, because obvs. The Spice Girls were Scary Spice, Sporty Spice, Baby Spice, Ginger Spice and Posh Spice, and became one of the best-selling girl bands of all time, with their single Wanna Be, hitting number one 37 different countries. I mean, #girlpower, or what?
4. Backstreet Boys
Ok, I need to sit for this one. Backstreet Boys are LIFE. I’ve been trying to get concert tickets for years, but no luck has struck as yet. I Want It That Way, Everybody, As Long As You Love Me, and Shape of My Heart are just a few songs that will make you want to rock in bed with your childhood teddy bear. And, after over 20 years in the business, BSB are STILL producing albums. If that isn’t success, I don’t know what is.
5. Westlife
Another great boy band, and ladies, they’re Irish. They performed together from 1998 to 2012, and reunited just last year. You can imagine the screams that left girls’ (well, now grown ass women) mouths when the news broke. Still not convinced? Listen to Queen of My Heart and then speak to me then, or don’t, because you may be sobbing. That black and white montage that becomes colour as the chorus begins is just classic.
6. *NSYNC
Back in the day, you were either an *NSYNC fan or a BSB fan, there was no two ways. The boy band graced us with their gorgeous presence from 1995 to 2002. Their most popular song is probably Bye Bye Bye, which not only brought about loads of fan girl moments, but LOTS of attitude.
7. The Pussycat Dolls
When this girl group came on, all you could do was scream, literally anything, but in this day and age it would probably be equivalent to YAS! They were absolute BOSS LADIES. They formed in 1995 as a burlesque troupe, meaning everything they did was sexy AF. Buttons was such a vibing song and, honestly, we didn’t know how sexual it was until years later. #Oops
8. Boyz II Men
This R&B vocal group was another explicit boy band, because HOT DAMN. They knew how to hit all the right spots when it comes to super romantic songs. I mean, just listen to this one. They put a splash of groove and a sprinkle of smooth into regular romance.
9. Take That
Mamma mia, what a group. These boys knew how to tug at those heart strings, be all dramatic, and then pump up the party. The British group is still touring to this day, minus two of its original band members. But damn, they’re fab!
10. En Vogue
Ok, this one’s the real deal. They were quite the progressive group, delving into hot topics such as drugs and prostitutes in their lyrics. Their most popular song, and one that literally everyone knows, is Free Your Mind, and damn, they made you do just that!
Are there any other girl or boy bands you absolutely love that didn’t make the list? Let us know!
