This Maltese Australian community is bringing a touch of Malta to Melbourne festival
The annual parade is one of the Moomba Festival highlights

The Maltese community in Australia is famed for its love for Malta. Only last month, Maltese Australians in Morwell inaugurated the country’s first museum dedicated to Malta, and now another group in Victoria are stepping it up a notch through their participation in a parade.

The Maltese Community Council of Victoria took to Facebook to announce their plans: “Great ready Moomba here we come. Get out there and support the Maltese contingent. We have flag bearers, fisher women, knights, dancers, farmers and villagers. Hope to see you cheering from the crowd. Hope we make you proud to be Maltese/Australians. Thank you to ABCreate Artworks for designing and creating our luzzu,” their post read.

Indeed the community's version of the Maltese luzzu, with the addition of wheels to facilitate its transportation, promises to be one of the highlights of the day. Members of the community taking part in the 4km-long parade will also be decked in traditional costumes and waving the national flag in celebration of Maltese culture.

The parade, which forms part of the Moomba Festival celebrations - Melbourne's annual free community festival, is set to take place on Monday 9th March. It will kick off in the morning and last till the early hours of the afternoon, and will see the participation of several other dance troupes and community groups.

When she’s not having a quarter-life crisis, Caroline is either drawing in a café, frittering her salary on sushi or swearing at traffic in full-on Gozitan. There is also the occasional daytime drink somewhere in the equation. Or two. A creative must be allowed at least one vice.
