Marco Parascandalo is a fashion designer who broke onto the scene in 2014 with his first six-piece menswear collection, SKANDLU. Ever since then he’s been a mainstay in the local fashion scene, well known for his street-savvy slogan t-shirts and grungy streetwear aesthetic. We had a chat with the designer to get a feel for his new collection, which will be shown this month at Malta Fashion Week.
Hi Marco! You’ve built up a reputation as one of Malta’s foremost fashion designers and your designs can be seen on cool young things all over the islands! Can you give us the lowdown on your past collections?
"Since my first showing at MFW as a New Designer with the SKANDLU collection, there was In The Sky in 2015, PARASCANDALO in 2016, Vanity Rebels in 2017 and STAR in 2018. Every year I am inspired by a different motif."
What is the inspiration behind this year’s collection?
"In 2016 we had launched the three Parascandalo motifs - the hand, the eye and the star. This year’s collection is inspired by the eye, and will be called Eyeconic. The eye represents a lot of things to different people. It is a sign of of good health and we see it on the likes of the Maltese luzzu where it is used as a symbol of protection. Another reference is the Eye Of Horus. My designs always have an element of streetwear, and this collection is also inspired by tattoos, and rooted in Maltese culture. It’s still very grunge, with an '80s/'90s feel. You can expect to see new designs of our signature t-shirts, hoodies and accessories."
Wow! We can’t wait to see what’s in store this MFW! What can we expect on the night?
"There’s going to be a surprise this collection which I want to keep under wraps. We have worked with some other artists this season... you’ll find out very soon!"
Exciting! When is the runway show and where will the collection be stocked following that?
"It will be on 27th May at Malta Fashion Week ’19 at Fort St Elmo! The new collection will be stocked online, as well as at Lee’s Hair Stylist in Sliema and The Mad Tatter in Zabbar."
