Incredible! Over one tonne of waste removed from Marsaxlokk’s Għar Aħmar in massive Żibel clean-up
The clean-up also involved the rescue of marine creatures trapped in fishing gear.

In an inspiring show of community action, local NGO Żibel has once again made an impact, this time at Għar Aħmar, Marsaxlokk, collecting a whopping 1,010.33kg of land and ocean waste in a single day!

The clean-up, held over the weekend, brought together a team of 64 volunteers from the ever-growing Żibel Tribe. Working both on land and under the sea, the team managed to remove over a tonne of debris ranging from plastic and metal to rubber, glass, and even discarded fabric.

Beyond waste collection, this clean-up also became a rescue mission. Żibel’s dive team discovered marine creatures trapped in abandoned fishing gear, including old nets and cages. Thanks to the divers' careful work, these creatures were safely freed and released back into the ocean.

Here's a breakdown of what was collected: 598.86 kg of plastic, 44 kg of glass, 76.64 kg of rubber, 133.50 kg of metal, 37.80 kg of wood and 33.63 kg of cloth, with the remaining 233.97 kg comprising mixed waste.

With every clean-up, Żibel is proving just how powerful community action can be – restoring natural spaces, protecting marine life, and inspiring a movement toward a cleaner, greener Malta.
