Apocalyptic scenes! Spooky fog shrouds parts of Malta in eerie calm
Not your usual summer sunrise!

Francesca Vella

Early risers across Malta were greeted by an unexpected and surreal sight over the weekend: a thick blanket of fog sweeping over the island, particularly in Mellieħa and Għadira. The fog, which rolled in during the night between Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th July, created a dreamlike – some might say apocalyptic – atmosphere that quickly caught the attention of social media users.

Photos and videos began surfacing online, showing clouds of low-hanging fog settling in the valleys and lowlands of northern Malta, with many describing the scenes as ‘spooky’ or ‘otherworldly’. Some of the most impressive images were captured by Malcolm J. Bezzina of Eye Captured Photography and shared by weather portal ‘It-Temp Madwarna’, who reported that there was dense fog in some valleys towards the west of Malta and very low clouds near Għadira in the early hours of Sunday.

According to the portal, the fog was a sign of more typical summer weather to come – high humidity, warm temperatures, and little wind – all conditions that can lead to the formation of early morning fog over valleys and coastal areas after a calm night.

As we move deeper into the summer months, such weather phenomena might become more frequent. So if you’re an early bird or night owl, it’s worth keeping your camera ready – Malta’s skies never fail to surprise!

Did you spot the fog on Sunday morning?
