The temperature today is expected to soar to a “sweltering 42°C” today, according to local weather forecaster Maltese Islands Weather, as health authorities urge people to stay indoors to beat the heat.

In what will “likely be the hottest day of 2021”, high temperatures today are expected to feel more like a whopping 45°C.

“It is also recommended that people avoid using the stove and oven as these will raise the temperature of the room,” she continued, advising everyone to “take cool showers and frequently wet your hands, face and back of neck.”

And it’s pretty serious – public health chief Charmaine Gauci has also issued a warning about today’s heat stress temperatures, reportedly advising to “keep the windows closed while the room is cooler than outdoors and then take the opportunity to cool the house during the night by opening the windows.”

The heatwave hitting the islands between today and tomorrow is due to a forecasted ‘heat dome’ over Southern Europe, which has been responsible for a number of wildfires in parts of Turkey and Italy in recent weeks.

Stay safe and beat the heat!

  • Stay inside as much as possible. Shut windows and draw curtains during the hottest part of the day.
  • Avoid going outside between 11am and 4pm. If you must go out, seek shade, wear protective clothing and sunscreen.
  • Cool down with cool baths or showers.
  • Drink cold, refreshing drinks often, and avoid tea, coffee and dehydrating drinks.
  • If you suspect heat-related symptoms, consult your doctor.
  • Protect your pets from the heat by ensuring they have a cool area and plenty of water.
  • Avoid leaving flammable materials in direct sunlight.
