The Brits are back! United Kingdom tops Malta’s visitor charts for first time since 2022
Sun-seeking Brits are making the most of Malta's spring sunshine.
Whether you’ve flown in for a sunny break or waved goodbye to family heading abroad, you’ve probably noticed just how busy Malta International Airport has become – and the numbers back it up!
Malta International Airport (MIA) has announced a strong start to 2025, publishing robust financial and traffic results for the first quarter and April.
MIA saw a 14 per cent year-on-year increase in passenger traffic from January to March 2025. April alone saw 896,769 people flying in and out of Malta, marking a 15.8% jump compared to April 2024.
And it’s not just more travellers, there are more flights too. The number of aircraft movements increased by 13.1%, and airlines are offering more seats on each flight, too. Planes are also flying fuller, with an average seat load factor of 86%, meaning most seats are taken.
In a bit of a twist, the United Kingdom is back on top as Malta’s biggest tourism market, slightly ahead of Italy. Germany, France, and Poland round out the top five, with traffic from Poland having jumped by 51%, thanks to route expansions by LOT Polish and Ryanair.
To keep up with the demand, Malta International Airport is investing heavily in improving the travel experience. Around €15.8 million has been channelled into upgrading spaces like the VIP Terminal, developing new aircraft stands, and continuing work on the SkyParks Business Centre II.
With over 100 routes planned for summer 2025, and a goal of reaching 9.3 million passengers by the end of the year, this promises to be one of the busiest years for Malta’s travel scene.
