The bee-eaters are back in Malta! Local artist shares a stunning photo of the colourful visitor
What an incredible shot!

Francesca Vella

A familiar name in local households thanks to his witty and whimsical cartoons, beloved Maltese artist Steve Bonello has taken to social media to share a very different kind of creation – a stunning wildlife photo of a European bee-eater (Merops apiaster).

Steve captioned his photo: ‘One of the most beautiful sights in our countryside at this time of year. The migration of the European bee-eater is in full swing right now and they can be seen (and definitely heard!) in most areas of the Maltese islands, including various urbanised areas.’

He also noted that the photo, taken a couple of years ago, is ‘arguably [his] best ever shot of this species’ – and it’s easy to see why. The image captures the bird’s vivid colours and graceful posture, offering a rare close-up of one of Malta’s most striking migratory visitors.

The European bee-eater is a seasonal spectacle, arriving in Malta during its spring migration. With its rainbow-hued plumage and distinctive call, this bird adds a splash of colour – and sound – to the local landscape.

Have you ever seen (or heard) one?
