Take care of your elderly! Maltese health authorities urge vigilance during cold weather
Keep your homes warm and wear warm clothing!

Mater Dei Hospital has issued a cold weather advisory as adverse conditions continue to affect parts of Malta, increasing the risk of slips, falls and cold-related illnesses.

While freezing temperatures may not be present, health officials warn that dangerously low body temperatures can still occur, particularly among elderly and vulnerable individuals.

The advisory urges the public to remain vigilant and to regularly check on elderly relatives, neighbours and those living alone. Keeping homes adequately warm, encouraging the use of warm clothing, and ensuring access to hot food and drinks can make a significant difference during colder spells.

Health authorities also highlighted the dangers associated with falls, noting that even a simple slip can become serious if a person remains on the ground for an extended period, potentially leading to hypothermia.

The public is reminded to seek immediate medical assistance if they suspect someone has a low body temperature or has sustained a serious injury. In such cases, emergency services should be contacted by calling 112.

Stay safe out there!
